Eid Al Adha 2025: A Weekend Celebration and How to Maximize Your Holidays

EID AL ADHA 2025: A WEEKEND CELEBRATION AND HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR HOLIDAYS

The highly anticipated holiday of Eid Al Adha is right around the corner. Besides excitement around the festivities and preparations, the big question on everybody’s mind is: “How many holidays are we getting?” This year, the religiously significant event is predicted to coincide with a weekend, sparking discussions on potential extended breaks.

Let's discover how you can make the most out of this long weekend and immerse yourself in the beauty of the holy festival in the UAE.

The Significance of Eid Al Adha and Arafat Day

Eid Al Adha, known as the "Festival of Sacrifice," commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's unwavering faith and willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God's command. This festival marks the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam, and is observed with communal prayers, charitable acts, and the ritual sacrifice of animals, symbolizing devotion and generosity.

The day preceding Eid Al Adha, known as Arafat Day, holds immense spiritual significance. Pilgrims gather on the plains of Arafat to pray and seek forgiveness, while Muslims worldwide engage in fasting and reflection, recognizing it as one of the holiest days in the Islamic calendar.

When is Eid Al Adha in 2025 - Actual Dates and Moon Sightings

The Islamic calendar is lunar-based, and the exact dates of Eid Al Adha are determined by the sighting of the new moon, marking the beginning of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th month in the Islamic calendar. While astronomical calculations suggest Eid Al Adha will fall on June 6, 2025, the official dates will be confirmed by the UAE's Moon Sighting Committee closer to the time.

Will We Get Additional Days Off in Lieu?

Given that Eid Al Adha in 2025 spans from Thursday to Sunday, residents will enjoy a four-day weekend. However, as the holiday coincides with the regular weekend, it's unlikely that additional days off in lieu will be granted. The UAE government typically announces official public holidays closer to the date, so the right way to go would be to stay updated through official channels for any changes or additional announcements.

Perfect Ideas to Celebrate the Long Weekend

With a four-day weekend on the horizon, here are some great ideas to make the most of your Eid Al Adha break:

  • Staycations: Explore luxury resorts or desert retreats within the UAE for a relaxing getaway.
  • Cultural Experiences: Visit museums, art galleries, or heritage sites to immerse yourself in the rich Emirati culture.
  • Family Gatherings: Organize family meals or barbecues to celebrate the occasion together.
  • Charitable Acts: Engage in community service or donate to charitable organizations, embodying the spirit of giving.
  • Outdoor Activities: Take advantage of the pleasant weather with beach outings, park visits, or desert safaris.

Extend the 4-Day Weekend into a 10-Day Break

For those looking to maximize their time off, consider combining the Eid Al Adha holidays with your annual leave. Here's how!

Take leave from Monday, June 2 to Wednesday, June 4. By doing so, you can enjoy a continuous break from Monday, June 2 to Sunday, June 8, totaling 7 days. If 7 days is not long enough for you though, you can extend further by including the following week in your annual leave.  If possible, add leave from Monday, June 9 to Wednesday, June 11, culminating in a 10-day holiday from Monday, June 2 to Wednesday, June 11.

This extended break provides an excellent opportunity for international travel, extended family visits, or comprehensive relaxation and rejuvenation.
